A well-arranged bedding ensemble can transform a bedroom into a visually cohesive and inviting space but deciding on which size and shape pillows to get for your bed can be confusing, unless you know the secret formula: 3-2-1, short for Three Euro Pillows, Two Shams and One smaller Decorative Pillow.

For a king-size bed, using the 3-2-1 approach, start with three square Euro pillows (typically 26" or 27" square") propped against the headboard as a base, followed by a pair of King Shams, and finishing with a smaller Boudoir Pillow, small Lumbar or Bolster centered at the front. This layered structure creates depth and visual interest while maintaining a clean, intentional look.
For a queen-size bed, place two or three Euro Pillows against the headboard, with a pair of smaller Standard Shams layered in front, and a single smaller Boudoir Pillow centered at the front. Another variation for a queen bed is to substitute a long Lumbar Pillow for the small Boudoir Pillow, centered in front.
To achieve a more dynamic look, consider three Euro Pillows against the headboard, two larger (22") square pillows centered between them, and a single long lumbar pillow placed in front.
A simpler, minimalist option is to use two Euro Pillows, two Standard Shams, and a single square decorative pillow, which offers a clean and balanced composition.
When mixing patterns and textures, it's recommended to start with a base of solid-colored pillows and then layer in patterned pillows, and a small-scale print in front, to create visual interest without overwhelming the space.
For a more luxurious appearance, combining Standard and King-sized Pillows can create a grander effect, with the larger pillows positioned at the back and smaller ones in front. Cylindrical Bolster Pillows can add a refined and tailored flair.
The bedding ensembles shown in our collections will give you a wide variety of beautiful pillow placement ideas. Ultimately, the key to a successful bed pillow arrangement lies in balancing size, scale, color and texture while avoiding clutter to maintain a pulled-together appearance.
You'll also notice in the ensemble images that there are often 'sleeping pillows' from our coordinating sheet sets shown placed between the Euro Pillows and the Shams. It's a great look that gives the ensemble more depth, shows off the beautiful coordinating trim on the pillowcases and provides a visual break if you have busy patterns on both your Euro Pillows and Shams. If you'd prefer not to showcase your 'sleeping pillows', you can always tuck them behind the Euro Pillows.
